3Package Deal 2016: fifteen talented new participants set to start
The participants for the 2016 edition of the 3Package Deal have been announced. No less than fifteen promising national and international artists have been selected to participate in this successful talent-development programme, an initiative of the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts (AFK) in association with Bureau Broedplaatsen. This year’s eclectic mix of talented artists highlights a sense of urgency in their choice of themes, forms of presentation and genres, and their relationship to the urban environment.
A many-sided selection
The talented people making up this diverse group represent a wide range of artistic disciplines and nationalities. Everything is included, from innovative applications and crossovers within the visual arts, film and theatre, to urban dance, social design and olfactory (or ‘fragrance’) art. These artists come not only from the Netherlands, but from such countries as South Africa, Israel and South Korea. What they all have in common is an extraordinary talent and a focus within their own work regarding current dilemmas, situated within the context of a dramatically changing society.
One example is Dries dePoorter, a digital creative who confronts us with privacy issues in public spaces, digital and otherwise; another is Sibs Shongwe-La Mer who portrays Johannesburg's youth culture in raw films shot in black and white. Fashion designer Tess van Zalinge uses her collection to reflect on associations with the Dutch landscape and its relationship to identity, while experimental designer Frank Kolkman challenges our ideas about contemporary and future technology. In his work, he poses questions about the 'afterlife' at a time when the religious system of belief is slowly being replaced by more confidence in rational science and technology. What are the relationships between the technical possibilities for extending life and the possibilities for ending life voluntarily?
Here you will find the biographies of all the artists selected for the 2016 3Package Deal.
About the 3Package Deal
The 3Package Deal is a collaboration between the AFK and Bureau Broedplaatsen (BBp) in which a select international group of talented participants from several disciplines of art receive affordable living and working space as well as a development budget (€22,500). In addition, the AFK puts together coalitions for each arts discipline, in which fifty of Amsterdam’s renowned cultural institutions participate. For the period of one year, these institutions take on the task of selecting and coaching promising artists and helping them to build their network and knowledge base while providing them with the opportunity to display their work on various platforms.
